Several forex markets emerged following WW1 in the run-up to WW2, notably the Kleinwort family, who led the way in the foreign exchange market in London. The Bretton Woods Accord was an international monetary agreement between sovereign nations to institute a governing monetary order. Between the U.S., Canada, Western Europe, Japan, and Australia, the order required that governments tie their national currencies to gold — prescribing that exchange rates must be maintained within 1 percent.
